True , very true , But I guess this lay hidden for all this while coz I guess very few people were in the know that there is such a treasure lying for 300 years . I think only the descendants of the royal family of Travancore knew of this wealth in the temple vaults and even they were not quite aware of the magnitude.Marthanda Verma , the maharaja of Travancore considered himself and his dynasty to be the servants of Lord Padmanabha (Padmanabha Swamy – Lord Vishnu reclining on his serpent) – Padmanabha Dasa and all the wealth accumulated during his reign which was donated to the Gods was kept by him on behalf of the Lord, in the temple vaults. I guess during his times he didnt feel the need to dip into the treasures for the welfare of his people and State. But it is true that during the time of a great Famine the Raja did use part of the wealth for rehabilitating and giving succour to his people.

On another note this pose of Vishnu reclining on Sheshnaga is also called as Anantha Shesha. The city of Thiruvananthapuram is named after him as the “City of Lord Ananta.”

But your guess is as good as mine , now that the wealth is in the open ,whether it will be spent fruitfully or will all the squabbling start and the Lord only knows how much of it will be pilfered to get into the hands of the corrupt…

Wow, Madhu. Those were the times. I guess all this will go either to the temple trust OR will make its way to some obscure museum that no citizen will ever visit. On a side note, a lot of new facts I didn’t know about.

The almighty doesn’t need to know…we all do…and I guess Mr. Sharbat Powder must be definitly eyeing a spot among the Trustees or even better, head the trust committee 🙂

No wonder he has lost his interest in the lucrative BCCI Chairman spot!

Great post, Nilesh. Well, in my opinion, what the temple wishes to do is completely their wish. Since it’s not Govt’s money or tax-payer money.

It definitely shouldn’t go to the government chest. Else it will literally go into their chests. I feel that the temple trust should open up their minds and use it for some good cause. Serve people, generate jobs, make a better kerela…..
